I do think character design diversity is important but pls let's not act like the boys in dandadan are diverse when they're all skinny white-skinned generically attractive boys with ONE exception

The point of the post wasn't even so much diversity as it was just character distinguishability. Whether you think Okarun's design is "attractive" or not he still has notably different features and a different build from Jiji, meanwhile Momo and Aira are identical aside from their hair and eyebrows.

And then there's obviously the aliens.

Where the male ones look weird in their base forms and have even weirder transformations, but the one female alien just happens to be a girl with antenna 100% of the time.

This weird need for female characters to be one specific kind of attractive all the time just gets in the way of decent character design.

All in all, this episode is quite good in the first minutes (the girls' fight), but things get a bit... ya know, Momo being jealous of the huge misunderstanding...

Then we have the Loch ness monster, but the laser and sound effects are really not as good as the previous episode. But it’s acceptable, probably because ep7 impact the anime so much! Reminds me so much of Acrobatic Silky :3

If the previous episode makes us shed our tears of sympathy of Acrobatic Silky's pastlife and Aira's comfort for her, this episode basically just flip everything into funny and normal day :)))

Chapter 96: Motivation

Ah yes, the curry scene. Would you count this as a love confession? In the Japanese version, she says "ダイスキ" (daisuki), which basically means "I really like you", so what do you think?

It's funny that Okarun had to transform just to eat, but also sad to think how in-pain he must be. The out-of-body experience kinda mentally prepared him for everything going on and I'm glad he's not confused and is getting ready to help his friends.

Also, I super loved Acro Aira's pose on this page, what a queen.

I really like the implication that despite her reluctance on the matter,

Aira is the one who can best match Evil Eye in a fight

at least prior to Okarun’s training arc.

While Aira is lacking in raw strength and spiritual energy, she makes up for it with exceptional technique. Close combat fighting is like dancing, and that’s where she excels. She’s already capable of following EE’s 4-beat rhythm from the start.

We can see this demonstrated even before the music room training. During one of his transformations at Momo’s house, Aira's shown to be the most effective in holding EE back ‘till the hot water is ready.

I think that’s partly why she’s so cavalier about letting EE out in later arcs. I don’t think it’s just her being selfish or rash - some part of her must be thinking ‘I can take him!'

But, I also think there’s a level of trust to it as well.

Trust in herself to keep him in check, trust in Jiji’s ability to restrain him, and trust in the Evil Eye himself to be more than a just vengeful embodiment of human rage and suffering. She's gotten comfortable with him by this point in the story after all - enough to scold and kick him just as she would Jiji and the others.

Speaking of matching, there's also thematic connections to consider.

Aira’s abilities come from Acrobatic Silky, a poor ballet dancer turned urban legend after meeting a tragic fate. AcroSilky's fondest memories are of when she would dance and play with her child, whom she yearned to see even after death.

When the Evil Eye was a living child, his greatest wish was to dance and play with someone as well. That got twisted up after centuries of watching other children suffer like he did - but just as AcroSilky sought out Aira in want of her child, Evil Eye's core desire is still there.

So I think it would be very nice if these two shared a one-on-one dance at some point... even if it's under the guise of play-fighting ^^;;

Dandadan and its Ability to go Outside the Standard Shonen Battle Manga Tropes:

I love Dandadan for many reasons: insanely good artwork, wild situations, beautifully choreographed fight scenes, its ability to drop my jaw in some way every chapter.

But something that set it apart from most shonen battle manga is how it adds characters to its roster, and how it develops relationships between its characters through the use of Harem tropes.

After Aira's initial introduction into the manga, we see the first use of "comical misunderstanding" or "unlucky timing", where Momo sees Okarun on top of Aira outside the school. In most harem settings, this would be used to set up a love triangle, and keep the main pairing away from actually developing romance. But Dandadan instead uses it as a springboard into another action filled arc: the Serpo Arc that happens in their school. More supernatural hijinks ensue, and so many wild and crazy "even in context this is insane" situations occur that wouldn't be outside of a wild Harem manga situation. But what makes Dandadans use of these tropes different is how it subverts them: By the conclusion of the arc, Momo asks for an explanation of the initial situation that kicked off the arc, and Okarun speaks honestly: He was trying to train to become stronger for her. And Aira herself, instead of sticking to her popular girl schtick of talking smack about Momo, admits to an entire group of classmates that *she* was the one who made up the lies about Momo. Dandadan subverts the harem tropes and uses it to develop their characters relationships.

At the end of the Serpo arc we meet Jiji, Momos childhood friend and "first love". The tone of everything in Jijis debut makes the audience assume that this will AGAIN be the introduction of a love triangle that stunts the growth of the main pairing. Except this time it will be Okarun and Jiji fighting over Momo. But the well already begins to be poisoned in the next chapter: Jiji is a huge goofball. Its not out of the well of possibility that a love triangle might happen, but it subverts tone and establishes Jijis personality. The next few chapters continually set up the potential triangle, and starts up the events of the Cursed House arc. We see Okarun clearly uncomfortable with Jiji and Momos relationship, and is rapidly falling for Momo. But during the bus ride to the Cursed house, we see Okarun and Jiji begin to become friends. And their interactions together when Momo leaves to relax at a hot spring deepen their friendship, and everything culminates upon the fight between Okarun and Jijis transformation: the Evil Eye. Okarun is not only enraged that Evil Eye for hurting Momo, but for taking Jiji away from them.

"give him back! Give me back my dear friend!"

And then Okarun proceeds to double-fisted uppercut the Evil Eye 20 times into submission, capping off one of the best fight scenes in manga. But all of that was just to subvert the love triangle, at least initially. After the arc, Jiji is a part of the group, and Aira comes back to help with dealing with ANOTHER harem trope: multiple personalities that trigger from hot/cold water, a classic trope started by Ranma 1/2. Specifically, the Evil Eye that is inside Jiji. This entire arc serves to deepen character relationships, and drive character development. But while it simmers the love triangle, its never diminished: Okarun still feels nervous that his friend will overtake him as Momos male love interest. But as always, it serves to deepen the relationship between Momo and Okarun instead of stunting it. It always struck me how relatable all of this was. Throughout all of these wild and crazy "it could only happen in a manga" situations, the solid foundation of character relationships always shines through as a driving factor to the manga. These teenagers actually act like teenagers, they interact as teenagers. And its the main reason I'm still so attached to these characters.

thoughts on episode eight of dandadan (spoilers obvi)

1) aira is still my girl, though i adore momo and tbh in her position i would’ve thrown hands so props to her for not doing that i suppose

2) omg aira gaining the powers of acrobatic silky? fucking awesome. i kind of predicted it, but the transformation was still so cool to see.

3) FUCK THE ALIENS IN THIS SHOW GODDAMN. so far the ghosts we’ve met have kinda just been menaces with good intentions (i mean turbo granny was protecting the souls of dead girls and acrobatic silky was protecting aira sob). the aliens are just FREAKS though. and they genuinely terrify me.

4) that lizard thing is terrifying holy shit.

5) if i had to guess (??) this fight will mainly be to showcase aira’s new powers, so i don’t think we’re meeting red haired guy, but i am excited to meet him. but it is possible considering my prediction is he’ll get his powers after an encounter with aliens considering right now okarun and aira are ghost based and momo is alien based.

anyway, another amazing episode, needed some fun after the devastation of episode seven, but my god this shows ability to go from comedy to heart wrenching tragedy to inciting genuine fear within me is masterful.

Under the read more are characters that are currently manga only. Aira and Jiji are in the first opening so they’ll appear soon. I thought about giving Ken Gatomon but Madleomon fit his transformed form better.

Okay okay so in my last Dandadan post I said some real interesting things about fanservice and the lackthereof that I’m not sure if I take back or not while reading the manga???

So spoilers ahead for the next arc the anime hasn’t started.

Because it’s WEIRD it feels so forced and not lingered on when they get in their underwear, it’s like swimsuits almost?? But it feels So Strange it’s like the author went “I guess I should put some in? Because it’s a shounen? But actually I only give a damn about the fight scene-“ though Momo continues being the MVP which is nice because I love her. I guess it’ll come down to if the animation decides to focus on certain shots how fanservicey it gets? If anything Okarun takes the biggest L because he’s full on naked. Though again the characters barely focus on or worry about it until their lives aren’t in danger! (Except a bit for Aira, she gets a bit ‘kyaa-ish’ in the moment but being stereotypical is like- her whole middleschooler syndrome thing she’s got going on, she’s hilarious)

Though I doubt the animation will get weird about it, the anime has actually been BETTER than the manga which is SO strange. Like the choices being made are so so good. I can’t wait to see how they animate all the water shenanigans that are going to take place.

I could write essays about the art direction going on in the anime, I could write paragraphs about the single ballerina scene in episode 7 alone not even mentioning the thing’s going on with the COLORS and the MUSIC so I’m so ready to see how they color the underwater fight and Aira’s transformation, it’ll probably be that magentaish pink the way Okarun has turbo granny’s red but they did add some more orange to him which was interesting.

I think I realized something.... Everyone with yokai transformations exhibits some kind of change in personality, which is entirely outside the control of the person, but I feel like it makes it clear with Zuma that.... They're almost... Embodying a character trope, when they do it? Zuma acts like some kind of romance protagonist when transformed,ade clear when he wasted one of his two umbrellas to shield momo from rain despite it being... An entirely idiotic decision, which he is shocked by when he changes back

And aira probably has a less obvious change than others given she's pretty high-and-mighty either way, but she definitely has a much more intense attitude and I forget what the word is, but she has a word she keeps using over and over to describe herself, her actions, etc, and acts kind of like a "princess/queen" type of character who thinks she's above others and is haughty and rude

And that explains why okarun keeps saying "yo" at the end of his sentences, it's not as common nowadays but having some kind of suffix a character adds onto the end of sentences IS a trope, think Naruto ykno? So idk WHAT exact trope he's embodying, but he definitely IS... Honestly he gives me soul from soul eater vibes and it's not just cus the design is kinda reminiscent of him he's gotta a kinda similar mode of speech and depressed air about him idk
